Brain dominance affects learning styles. Most learners use both sides of their brain to obtain information; however, some learners unconsciously prefer the right side of the brain for learning while others prefer the left side. Using a visual representation of difficult vocabulary words is a useful method for learning unfamiliar words. Later, if students forget the definition of the word, they associate the picture with that word and instantly know its meaning. For right-brained learners, this is an especially valuable tool for learning unfamiliar words.
I have been a reading specialist for 35 years and have tried many techniques to help my average, above average, and learning-disabled students learn vocabulary words and keep these words in their long-term memory, so I created Visual SAT Vocabulary Cards, and I couldn't believe my results. All of my students eagerly learned the words and two months later they still remembered their meanings by associating the words with the wonderful, and many times humorous, pictures. These pictures accurately correspond to the easy pronunciations, creative sentences, and clear definitions. As a result, every one of my students easily acquired a large bank of vocabulary words and used these cards to increase their scores on the verbal section of the SAT. I only wish I had used these cards throughout my teaching career. What a fabulous way to learn, not only for my visual learners but for my other students as well!
